A short explanation of the Feast of the Dormition.

Dear Church Family,

On Sunday, August 30th, immediately following Trapeza, we will be introducing the Myrrh-bearing Ministry. We are hoping to establish this in our parish and we will also discuss the Orthodox perspective on death and burial - one that honors the physical body as a temple of the Holy Spirit and embraces beauty and simplicity in preparing it for burial. Following the example of the Myrrh-bearing women who approached the tomb of the Lord prepared to anoint and reverence HIs body, we pray that our Ministry will continue to faithfully offer a Christian ending to those within our parish community. This ministry involves everyone in our parish, either by actual need, or as a volunteer helping with reading or transport or many other needs for this ministry to be effective. “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7

The goal of this meeting will be to present the logistical framework for how to make your wishes known and fill out paperwork that communicates them to your loved ones. Please print the workbooks we will go through together that can be found by clicking HERE and HERE. We will briefly touch on the actual preparation of the body for burial and invite interested parishioners to join the Myrrh-bearing Ministry.

A good resource to consider in learning more about this subject is the book A Christian Ending: A Handbook for Burial in the Ancient Christian Tradition (2nd Ed), by Deacon Mark Barna and his wife and it can be purchased by clicking HERE. There is also a video tutorial for preparation for the body taught by Monica Staniger of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Chico that can be viewed HERE.

As many of you know, the financial responsibility of feeding our parish each week has grown as our community has grown. The Parish Council recently decided to begin budgeting $200 per week to help offset the cost of the ingredients for the Trapeza Teams to prepare our meals.

Accordingly, we would like to suggest a donation of $1 per person or $5 per family to help offset this expense. This donation is a suggestion, not a requirement and your generosity is appreciated! Donations should be made in the designated “Trapeza Fund” can that will be near the beginning of the serving line going forward.

Here, you’ll find important information about recent decisions, ongoing stewardship updates, upcoming projects, and ways we’re working to support the life and growth of our parish. Our goal is to keep you informed, involved, and connected as we continue to serve Christ and one another.

We’re so glad you’re here! If you feel moved to support the life of our parish, there are a couple of simple ways to do so. While we’re currently working on setting up online donations, you’ll find a small box in the Narthex labeled “Tithes and Donations” where you can leave your offering.

Another meaningful way to help is by contributing to our Trapeza Fund, which pays for a festal meals and keeps our weekly fellowship meals going strong. If you’d like to give, there’s a clearly marked coffee can labeled “Trapeza Fund” in the Trapeza. Additionally, if you would like to join one of our four Trapeza teams, please let Elena Ellis know.
